Reflections of the first part of the SUW from Portpatrick to Beattock
Two days from Sanquhar through Wanlockhead and the Lowther Hills to Beattock on the SUW.
Continuing on the SUW from St John’s towards Sanquhar via Polskeoch including an overnight on Benbrack.
Most of the Southern Upland Way from Bargrennan to St John’s of Dalry passes through the Galloway Forest Park. It could just about be done in a long day, although most people will take at least two, more if you plan diversions such as climbing the Merrick. There are no services on this section so…
This first section of the Southern Upland Way is likely to take most people 2 to 3 days to complete. There is a good bothy about halfway at Laggangarn (where you can also camp), but otherwise no accommodation, shops or pubs once you’ve left the Stranraer area. Bargrennan has a hotel/restaurant.
With a new Trailstar and some other gear to get to know, I looked at a weekend a bit closer to home; a Pentland Hills circuit from Livingston. It was one of the coldest nights of the year and everything worked just fine.
A two night trip from Biggar in the Scottish Borders into the hills by nearby Drumelzier. Camping by Drumelzier and on Pykestone Hill.
